Considering the weight and thickness this is a great jacket for wind and cold. I wear it 4 - 5 times a week biking/running to work at a distance of 8 miles. It breaths extremely well, the fit was true to size, drys fast, and it is flexible and light with lots of pocket space. The cuffs, waist band, and neck band are great for keeping in heat. For extreme weather I could see it working as a great layer. I have had it now for only a month, so I cannot comment on the longevity. I highly recommend this jacket.

()

My Review of Bolle Parole Sport Sunglasses

Sierra Trading Post

Closeouts . I find they fit really well around the ears, where most glasses hurt.

They do not fog up much, and are quick to defog once you get moving again. Best glasses I have had for minimal fogging.

I use them running, hiking, biking, MTB, and driving. They offer great protection around the eye for wind and branches. I have not had any watering eyes since wearing the glasses.

I really like the tint and the fact that you can change lenses.

They come with a great carrying case which will allow me to take better care of them, not one of my strong suits.

I got them on save for 75% off, so it was a great deal.

()

My Review of Columbia Sportswear Aquapel Pants - UPF 30 (For Men)

Originally submitted at Sierra Trading Post

Closeouts. I own a pair of Redfeather back country for hiking and exploring. I have been snow shoeing for 25+ years, so I did wear the old school tennis racket shaped snow shoes. Technology has certainly changed since then.

I have used these for outings of up to 2.5 hrs. The terrain has varied over granite rocks, trees, packed and powdered snow (surprised at how well they do in deep powdered snow). They have taken a beating with only scratches on the snow shoes. I have broken off the claws on other snow shoes, so I can confirm this is high quality gear. I also weight 210 lbs which would add to the stress.

I like the quick snap and the comfort of the boots. They work exceptional well together. There are times when snow will get into the clip holes, but a quick tap will clear it out. In wet snow I did find the snow to stick around the claws, however, this occurs with every snowshoe.

I don't have any real cons, this is the most amazing innovation for the snow shoe I have ever seen or used. I have read reviews on this product for 2 years before purchasing. The vast majority has been very well rated.

Kahtoola FLIGHTboot Review

2.5 hrs is the most I have spent at one time in the boot. The weather has ranged between -4 and 36 Fahrenheit.

In cold weather my feet remained warm, but not too warm. In the wet snow my feet were warm and remained dry. The boots are very comfortable, I do recommend a low profile shoe, such as a trail runner.

The only con is the drying time of the material. However, if you store them in a dry room or near a warm vent, they can dry overnight.

I also own the FlightDeck snow shoe, they are incredible together.

I would love to see a way for these to snap into a bike pedal. I mountain bike year around and these boots would be perfect to keep my feet warm. When you have to get off the bike for major hills, they have great grips for climbing.

My Review of Kenyon Long Underwear - Silkweight Thermal Bottoms (For Men)

Originally submitted at Sierra Trading Post

Closeouts . The studs are beginning to bend in but still give great grip.

They are a little more stiff than what I had hoped. I have used different devices like Yak Trax and others, this the best solution I have found for winter sneakers. The Yak Trax would always break after a month or two.

(legalese)

My Review of Tubbs Little Bear Snowshoes (For Youth)

Originally submitted at Sierra Trading Post

Closeouts . After a month or two I was able to run 5KM. Being very pleased with myself the next summer I decided I would train for a 10KM. It was for charity, which was a great first race on many levels. I was so pleased with myself for the fact that I could run for just under an hour without taking a break. That was it, I really wanted to try a half marathon. So that fall I trained and finished my first half marathon. The last mile I was over whelmed with emotion. I was completely blown away that I just ran for 2 hours and felt great. Such a sense of accomplishment.

I ran a more half marathons after that, but found it hard to commit the time to run a full marathon. Running a business and raising small children made it tough to train. Life would be so busy that I would go months without training.

In the summer of 2006 I made time by starting at 6AM on Saturday mornings for long runs. During the week I would run later in the evenings or early in the morning before work. I also biked to work to get in some extra training. Having a very supportive wife helped immensely. I had started trail running that summer and really liked it. So instead of a marathon I thought I would go a little further and enter a 50KM trail race (31 Miles - 5 miles longer than a marathon). After months of training, the race was cancelled, I was very disappointed. We had a planned a trip to my in laws and there was a marathon that weekend. Without tapering and using an old pair of road shoes I signed up the Friday before the race on Sunday. I ran all the way except taking a few minutes of walking after the aid stations to drink and eat. Didn't break any records but I finished.

In the spring of 2007 I bought a plane ticket, paid my non refundable entry fee for the Black Foot Ultra in Edmonton, AB. The 50KM race was in May and during a training run at the end of March I fell and broke my leg. Had to walk out 1.5+ miles over ice and mud to an access road. Luckily I had friends with me, one stayed while the others when out and got a vehicle. It took about 90 minutes to get out, and my foot was hugh by the time I got a ride. The friend who stayed was only there for moral support, as he was not able to support any of my weight due to trail conditions. Trail Lesson 101: ALWAYS bring food and change of hat, shirt, etc - especially in the winter time.

After 8 weeks in a cast I had physio and used a crutch to walk. About 8 weeks after that I was able to start off with some light flat surface biking, then a little running and easy mountain biking. I highly recommend biking to get mobility back. The rest of the year was spent getting my leg back in shape.

In 2008 with a new attitude and 25 pounds of extra weight (total weight of 220lbs that I gained while I was laid up and not doing much exercise) I started seriously training again. Completed a half marathon in February, a 50KM in May, and a 38 Miler in June.

My leg felt great and I decided to try out a 50 miler 4 weeks ago. The North Face Challenge seemed like a great fit - well supported, good trail route, and a nice race for a first 50 miler. After 3 hours of headaches, 4 hours of a bad stomach I finally finished at 11 hours and 36 minutes - 24 minutes to spare before the cut off time.

They say that any idiot can run a marathon, it takes a special idiot to run 50 miles. Seriously though - anyone who puts their mind to it can complete a 50 miler. Explaining how it feels to complete one is liking telling someone what it is like to be there when your children are born. Cannot be expressed in words - nothing tops having children, but this was up there as a second placer for me.

Be patient, listen to your body, you will get out of it what you put in - both physically and mentally.

First Blog, First Post

What ever life serves up and how you react makes all the different between well and ill being.
